Dr. Katy Campbell West joined the WestVet team in September 2016.

She completed her undergraduate work at George Fox University in Newberg, OR (2004 -2008) with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. She earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2012, also being awarded the Novartis-Ethicon Surgical Excellence Award for Large Animal Surgery that same year.

Just prior to graduation from vet school, Dr. Campbell was selected from a highly competitive applicant pool for a one-year Rotating Small animal Internship (2012-13) at WestVet. During her time at our specialty center, she quickly distinguished herself with her professional demeanor, affinity for surgical services, and warm and communicative interaction with clients and our entire team.

She received an additional honor during her internship year at WestVet when she was selected to sit on the committee for the National American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVALE) Successful completion of this national examination is the final step for graduating veterinary students to become licensed to practice. In her role on the committee, Dr. Campbell reviewed former and current questions, compiled statistical information, and assisted in developing testing methods for future examinations.

Following her time with us, she was selected for a surgical residency at the Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center. This rigorous, three-year program enabled Dr. Campbell to gain multiple hours of clinical experience working alongside other board certified surgeons.

In addition, residents are required to publish a research paper in a peer-reviewed professional journal. Dr. Campbell’s paper has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Veterinary Surgery. Entitled “Outcome of Tibial Closing Wedge Osteotomy in 55 Cranial Cruciate Ligament-Deficient Stifles of Small Dogs,” the article is slated for print in a future publication.

Born and raised in Springfield, Oregon, Dr. Campbell tells us her very patient parents allowed her to have numerous pets of various species, kindling her love of animals. She not only excelled in the classroom – but also on the basketball court. She competed in high school and during her undergraduate studies where she received numerous athletic accolades including:

  • Nominee for Oregon Female Athlete of the Year
  • NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball All-American Honorable mention 2012
  • NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball North West Conference player of the year 2011 and 2012

Dr. Campbell, her husband Justin, and their active Labrador Retriever “Bear” are all outdoor enthusiasts. When she’s not working, you may find the three of them enjoying the many recreational activities that the Treasure Valley has to offer.
