Cheri Nielsen, DVM, MS, Diplomate, ACVS, is a Board-certified Veterinary Surgeon at MedVet Mountain View. She has been a part of the team since 2017.
Dr. Nielsen earned an undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering with a minor in applied mathematics. It wasn’t until her second year of medical school at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine when her dog needed the services of a surgical specialist, that she became aware of veterinary surgery as a career option. This opened the door to a life-changing decision; she left Johns Hopkins to pursue a veterinary career.
Dr. Nielsen earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in Davis, CA while concurrently completing a Master of Science degree in biomedical engineering. She then continued on to a one-year clinical internship at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO. She completed a three-year surgical residency at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN and successfully fulfilled the rigorous credentialing and examination requirements to become a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in small animal surgery.
Dr. Nielsen has been providing innovative and compassionate surgical care in the San Francisco Bay Area since 2006. She has a particular passion for minimally invasive procedures (i.e. laparoscopy and thoracoscopy) and also for the advanced reconstruction techniques required with many cancer surgeries. Patient comfort and client communication are top priorities for Dr. Nielsen. She finds passion in working with people who prioritize animals in their lives.
When not caring for patients, Dr. Nielsen can be found outdoors, whether its trail running, cycling, backpacking, or gardening. In 2016, she took a wilderness sabbatical to hike the entire length of the Pacific Crest Trail from Canada to Mexico, pursuing a lifelong dream of hers. She loves any hobby that she can use her hands such as wheel-thrown pottery, woodworking projects, cooking, and, most importantly, eating.
