History

Founded in 1988 and headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, MedVet is a widely recognized and growing group of emergency and specialty referral veterinary hospitals for companion animals with practices in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Alabama, Texas, Utah, Idaho, and Michigan. MedVet hospitals are led by veterinarians committed to delivering the highest quality and most compassionate specialty and emergency veterinary care available in the nation.

MedVet’s Emergency Medicine Department provides emergency medicine and urgent care to sick and injured pets. MedVet’s specialty departments include veterinarians with advanced training in anesthesia and analgesia, avian and exotics, cardiology, critical care, dentistry and oral surgery, dermatology, integrative medicine, internal medicine, interventional radiology, medical oncology, neurology and neurosurgery, oncology, ophthalmology, radiation oncology, radiology, rehabilitation, and surgery. These specialists provide state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment options.

The emergency and specialty departments work together to ensure efficient and collaborative care for pets. Our priorities are the health and well-being of pets and supporting pet owners and their family veterinarian.

Our doctors, technicians, and specialists are the best and brightest in their fields, often serving as distinguished faculty and researchers as well as leading clinical experts. Our team puts great importance on collaborative care and we partner with primary care veterinarians to ensure the best outcomes and the quality care that pets deserve. MedVet medical centers evaluate and treat over 400,000 dogs and cats every year and more than 4,500 veterinarians not only refer their patients but also bring their own pets to us because we provide unsurpassed expertise and real respect for families and their pets.

MedVet’s Timeline

  • A partnership of five local veterinarians started the North Columbus Veterinary Emergency Service in 1976. Their goal was to provide the community with a place for after hour, weekend and holiday pet emergency care.
  • By 1977, the shareholders had increased to 30, and the business was incorporated as the Columbus Veterinary Emergency Service (CVES).
  • MedVet was founded in 1988 by Dr. William DeHoff and Dr. James W. Harrison as the Veterinary Hospital Operations of Central Ohio, Inc. d/b/a MedVet, to provide specialty veterinary services to the community. After providing many years of veterinary care at the Animal Medical Center in New York City, and teaching surgery at the College of Veterinary Medicine at The Ohio State University, Dr. DeHoff recognized the growing need for specialty care in veterinary medicine.
  • In 1990, a clinic located at 5747 Cleveland Avenue, was constructed to house the Columbus Veterinary Emergency Services (CVES), MedVet and Veterinary Diagnostics Laboratory, a veterinary reference lab. By this time, the emergency service had almost 70 central Ohio veterinarian shareholders. As specialists from many disciplines joined MedVet, the specialty care practice was able to expand and grow in scope. Together, the specialty and emergency staff began to act as an extension of the family veterinarian to provide state-of-the art critical, emergency, and specialty care.
  • In 2002, MedVet Associates, Ltd. almost tripled its space by moving into a 54,000 square foot medical center in Worthington, Ohio. MedVet Medical Center for Pets continued to experience significant annual growth.
  • In 2008, MedVet added All Animal Eye Clinic in Cincinnati and a dermatology service in Dayton.
  • In March 2009 MedVet opened a new 5,000 square feet Cancer Center in Columbus and was renamed the MedVet Medical & Cancer Center for Pets. MedVet’s Cancer Center expanded to offer surgical, medical, and radiation oncology services and focuses on providing comfortable, compassionate and comprehensive care.
  • In August 2010, MedVet expanded further by acquiring the Emergency Veterinary Clinic of Cincinnati (EVCC). This acquisition set the framework for the Eye Center practice, the emergency practice of EVCC, and several newly hired MedVet specialists to join in one location to provide a full service companion animal referral hospital.
  • In 2012, MedVet built and opened a new 25,000 square foot facility in Cincinnati (Fairfax) designed to accommodate growth and the addition of further specialties new to the Cincinnati region. MedVet also opened its third full-service emergency and multi-specialty hospital by acquiring the Dayton Emergency Veterinary Clinic (DEVC) and adding specialty services. MedVet Dayton services included 24-hour dedicated emergency care as well as Cardiology, Dermatology, Internal Medicine, Ophthalmology, and Surgery specialties. Medical Oncology was added in January 2013.
  • In August 2012, the MedVet Cincinnati, MedVet Columbus, and MedVet Dayton facilities were combined under the name of MedVet Medical & Cancer Centers for Pets. As of August 2012, MedVet included 70 doctors and a staff of 361 in Ohio.
  • In November 2012, MedVet expanded services into Louisiana by merging with the Louisiana Veterinary Referral Center (LAVRC). The LAVRC was founded in 1999 and had 72 employees, including 22 doctors, and is now doing business as MedVet Mandeville. Further expansion into Metairie on the South Shore with emergency services soon followed as MedVet New Orleans. MedVet and its Louisiana partners upgraded the New Orleans emergency practice by adding specialty services and relocating to a new location which opened on February 1, 2013. They later acquired Southeast and built a new medical center in New Orleans which opened July 18, 2016.
  • In January 2014, MedVet acquired Capital Veterinary Referral & Emergency Clinic, on the East side of Columbus, now known as MedVet Hilliard. This well-established internal medicine, surgery, and emergency practice gave additional coverage to the central Ohio veterinary community and added the first avian and exotics specialty to the MedVet network of hospitals.
  • In January, 2015 MedVet expanded into the Gulf Coast of Alabama and eastern Mississippi with the addition of The Animal Emergency and Referral Center of Mobile now known as MedVet Mobile. MedVet also expanded into Kentucky with the addition of the AA Small Animal Emergency Service (AA ER) now known as MedVet Lexington.
  • In August 2015, MedVet expanded into Northern Ohio with the addition of the Animal Emergency and Critical Care Center of Toledo (AECCC), now known as MedVet Toledo as 24/7 Emergency hospital.
  • In September 2015,  MedVet expanded into Indiana with the addition of Circle City Veterinary Specialty & Emergency, now known as MedVet Indianapolis.
  • In December 2015, MedVet expanded into Illinois and the Chicago community by acquiring Chicago Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Center (CVESC), Animal Dermatology Center of Chicago, Cardiology Pet Referral, Chicago Veterinary Cancer Center, Chicago Veterinary Internal Medicine and Oncology Group, Chicago Veterinary Neurology and Neurosurgery Group, Fox Valley Veterinary Dentistry and Surgery, Northeast Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging, PawsitivEnergy Rehabilitation Center and WestVet Surgical Center of Chicago to form what is now MedVet Chicago. This partnership allowed MedVet to better support clients and referring veterinary practices in the Chicago community.
  • October 2016, MedVet broke ground to build a new 19,000 square feet facility to expand services at  MedVet Dayton. The Toledo location added specialty services of surgery, internal medicine and radiology to their 24/7 emergency service.
  • December 2016, MedVet expanded into Texas by acquiring Emergency Animal Clinic, Inc. which included three after-hours emergency clinics in Dallas which included MedVet Dallas, MedVet Uptown and MedVet Richardson. 
  • In April 2017, MedVet expanded their Texas practices with the addition of MedVet Grapevine. This practice also brings specialty services to the Dallas area with specialists in veterinary internal medicine and cardiology.
  • In May 2017, MedVet expanded their Ohio practices with the addition of MedVet Mahoning Valley. This practice brings emergency services to the Northeast Ohio area.
  • In July 2017, MedVet continued to grow their Northeast Ohio presence with the addition of MedVet Akron, MedVet Cleveland Northeast, and MedVet Cleveland West. This added specialty services to the area in addition to 24-hour emergency medicine.
  • In October 2017, MedVet expanded their presence into Michigan with the addition of Animal Neurology & MRI Center, a MedVet Partner.
  • March 2018, MedVet expanded west into Idaho with the addition of WestVet Boise, and MedVet Northern Utah.
  • In November 2018, MedVet expanded east in Pennsylvania with the addition of MedVet Pittsburgh.

MedVet’s Emergency Care

No appointment is needed for our emergency room; however, we suggest pet owners call ahead to let us know they are on the way. This allows our staff to prepare for critical or life-threatening situations.

Our veterinarians and veterinary technicians have extensive training and experience in emergency veterinary care for cats and dogs. Our expert staff combines their knowledge and skill with our state-of-the-art equipment to effectively treat pets facing even the most challenging medical emergencies.

MedVet’s Specialties & Services

Our MedVet specialists are highly trained veterinarians who have undergone extensive, post-graduate training in a specific field of veterinary medicine. We have the most board-certified veterinary specialists under one roof in the Midwest.

In addition to four years of undergraduate study and four years at an accredited veterinary college, specialists must spend another four to five years of specialized training in an internship and residency program. To become board-certified, veterinary specialists must also complete rigorous clinical training, research, scientific publication and examination requirements.
