MedVet offers a Veterinary Externship Program, also known as internship and preceptorship opportunities, for veterinary students and veterinary technology students.  Externships provide hands-on clinical experiences for students seeking additional opportunities. Externships are often a requirement of academic programs and the MedVet Externship Program is designed to meet those requirements.

Veterinary Externship Qualifications and Details

Veterinary Students

  • MedVet veterinary student externships are designed for fourth-year veterinary students seeking additional training and experience at a small animal emergency and specialty referral practice.
  • The MedVet specialty and emergency externship program provides a structured clinical experience supervised by experienced emergency doctors and board-certified specialists in a variety of specialties. Depending on your externship location, experiences may include anesthesia & analgesia, avian & exotics, cardiology, critical care, dentistry & oral surgery, dermatology, emergency medicine, internal medicine, integrative medicine, neurology & neurosurgery, medical oncology, ophthalmology, radiation oncology, radiology, rehabilitation, and/or surgery.
  • As a MedVet extern, you will be part of a well-designed training program that provides you with the experience to complete your veterinary education. Externs have many opportunities for participation in journal clubs, daily clinical rounds, formal rounds, assist with the management of emergency cases, medical and surgical cases, and interact with many MedVet interns, residents, specialists, and technicians.
  • The duration of MedVet externships vary but are most often two weeks. Students are responsible for their own accommodations. Schedules can often be flexible as most MedVet locations are open 24/7.

Veterinary Technician Students

  • MedVet veterinary technician externships are designed for the veterinary technician student who is required to complete an externship and is seeking additional training and experience at a small animal emergency and specialty referral practice. Students will work closely with our veterinarians, customer service representatives, registered/licensed veterinary technicians (RVTs and LVTs), and veterinary assistants as part of their training.
  • The MedVet specialty externship will provide a structured clinical experience supervised by a credentialed veterinary technician in a variety of specialties. Depending on your externship location, experiences may include anesthesia & analgesia, avian & exotics, cardiology, critical care, dentistry & oral surgery, dermatology, emergency medicine, internal medicine, integrative medicine, neurology & neurosurgery, medical oncology, ophthalmology, radiation oncology, radiology, rehabilitation, and/or surgery.
  • As a MedVet extern, you are part of a well-designed training program that provides you with the experience to complete your veterinary technician education. Externs have many opportunities for participation or observation in advanced medical and surgical cases and interact with many MedVet interns, residents, technicians, and specialists.
  • The duration varies based on requirements of the student’s program and is most often three to ten weeks. Students are responsible for their own accommodations. Schedules can often be flexible as many MedVet locations are open 24/7.
