A BOARD CERTIFIED VETERINARY DERMATOLOGIST® has special training in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of conditions affecting the skin, hair, ears, mucus membranes and nails/claws/hooves of animals. They participate in continuing education and teaching throughout their careers to remain up-to-date on the diagnosis and treatment of the conditions they see. They communicate and work with other members of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology regarding all aspects of veterinary dermatology.
Patient care of veterinary dermatology patients is a collaborative effort between the pet owner, primary care veterinarian, and veterinary dermatologist consulting on the case. Primary care veterinarians refer patients to a veterinary dermatologist to consult on a new or chronic dermatology problem, to perform diagnostic tests and procedures routinely conducted in the primary care setting, to evaluate a condition they are not immediately familiar with, and for additional recommendations regarding treatment of one of their patients with dermatology problems. Pet owners are encouraged to always communicate with the primary care veterinarian regarding a pet’s referral to a dermatologist.
